The Enterprise was on assignment in the Frenian Beta System orbiting the planet Tavia. Captain Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Chekov and Uhura were on assignment to negotiate mineral rights for the Federation.
The Ambassador who was to accompany Kirk and Spock became ill with a virus she contracted on her last assignment. It was undetected by the Lexington's ship doctor, lying dormant until it was ready to rear its ugly head.
Ambassador Sheila Earl was a sophisticated, competent negotiator who obtained what she set out for. She was one of the Federations leading Ambassadors for the past ten years. The tenure of her Ambassadorship has led her to Tavia and to place the negotiations alongside her many accomplishments. Sheila Earl was astute, perceptive and resourceful. The Federations confidence in her ranked with that of Sarek of Vulcan. Now she lies in sickbay as a result of the near fatal virus.
Dr. McCoy found an antidote for the dreadful disease, but she faced two weeks of recuperation. She was an aggressive ambassador who got her way, but not while she was in sickbay. In sickbay she had met her match, Dr. McCoy.
"You will lie there for two weeks and if you don't behave yourself I'll make it three with security to watch over you. In here my word is law and it will do you good not to forget it."
Both Kirk and Spock watched the offended Ms. Earl and felt a bit of remorse for her, Dr. McCoy could be ruthless, cold and ironfisted at times. Nevertheless, she did come close to dying and she was not yet strong enough to engage in the upcoming negotiations with the Tavians.
It was crucial the talks between the Federation and the Tavians continued at the appointed time. Spock suggested Uhura take the ambassador's place on the female dominated planet. With her communication and linguistic skills she was the logical choice.
The men accompanied Uhura as consultants, but to the Tavians they were her slaves.
**************
The Queen’s secretary, Areena, followed by the five Enterprise crew, showed Uhura to her suite in the palace.
"Uhura, these are your rooms. This is the Great Room for entertaining your guests while you're visiting with us. If you need anything that your slaves cannot offer you, you may reach me by pressing this button here.
"Thank you, Areena, you are most kind."
"Now, If you will follow me, I'll show you where your slaves are to sleep."
They walked into a spacious bathing room filled with mirrors on every wall and ceiling, reflecting the vast tub that sat in the middle of the room. The impressive bath brought to Uhura’s mind the antique Jacuzzi of earth, and she envisioned herself immersing into perfumed water, surrounded by glistening bubbles. There was even a red lounging chair positioned next to the tub itself for added ambiance.
Chekov's imagination went wild observing the mirrors and the objects in the room. He smiled as he glanced at McCoy, assuming he comprehended his thoughts.
// I could easily become some woman's love slave in here. //
The Ambassador and her entourage were led down a narrow hall past the bathing room that led to a doorway. Stepping inside, Uhura saw a very modest room for the men. The walls were bare as well as the floor, unlike the rest of the suite. Uhura noted that she needed to request more bed clothing for the men or they would freeze in the thin insignificant material that was provided.
Areena turned to Uhura's slaves and blatantly examined them as she tried to come to a conclusion.
"Which one is your favorite, Ambassador Uhura?"
"I beg your pardon?"
"Which one do you prefer over the others, one you use for your pleasure?"
Stunned by the request, Uhura stumbled over her words as she tried to come up with a believable answer.
With an air of superiority, the secretary lifted her chin at Uhura's reaction.
"Surely the Federation allows its first class citizens to have a favorite."
Gaining control of her reaction Uhura bristled as she looked the woman straight in the eyes, addressing her with dignity and authority.
"I was merely shocked that you had to ask!"
Without turning her head, Uhura continued to look at the woman then pointed at her choice.
Spock.
"That one is my favorite."
The woman had a smug expression on her face.
"This month," added Uhura victoriously.
The Areena’s face fell. Recovering, she addressed Spock as if speaking to a simpleton.
"Spock, you may follow your mistress and myself."
"Only I call him Spock. You may call him Mr. Spock."
Areena watched the new Ambassador with disapproval and when Uhura did not bat an eye, the secretary conceded.
"As you wish, Ambassador."
"And, you will also address my other men as Mr. Kirk, Mr. McCoy and Mr. Chekov. Those, of course, are their names and they will attend as well."
Uhura was determined to maintain a presence which demanded respect so she gestured with a dignified lift of her chin and a raised brow.
"Yes, Ambassador. This way,” said Areena as she slightly bowed her head.
Uhura and the men followed their guide into an enormous bedroom occupied by an ostentatiously- sized bed. Uhura forgot about her dignified air when she looked at it.
"That's a big bed."
"Yes. The Queen uses one similar to this. She and her favorite find it quite comfortable and satisfactory for all their… needs."
"Uh...where would my favorite sleep if I tire of him?"
The woman stood there dumbfounded.
"I don't know, Ambassador. Everyone sleeps with their favorite. I guess you could just have him move to the other side of the bed if you want."
Uhura felt the heat rising into her face as she envisioned herself sleeping with the First Officer of the Starship, Enterprise.
"Well, Ambassador, it was a pleasure meeting you. The Queen requests your presence at breakfast tomorrow morning. Your men should be able to tend to all your needs with the supplies in the bathing room. Remember to push the yellow button if you require anything that is not readily available here. I hope this suite meets with your approval?"
"Yes, thank you, it's beautiful. You may tell your Queen I am well satisfied and I will meet her at the appointed time."
The Queen’s secretary exited the bedroom leaving the awkward five crew members looking at everything but each other.
******************
Kirk was the first to speak up after the long unsettling silence.
"Well."
"Well indeed, Captain," said Spock.
Then McCoy added his two cents.
"Well."
Areena walked in again and addressed Uhura.
"Ambassador, I forgot to inform you that someone will be up to show your favorite around, that he may be well acquainted with the facilities to ensure nothing will hinder his... performance for you tonight."
Uhura developed an uncontrollable cough and the men suddenly found the ceiling interesting.
McCoy quickly ran to the bathing room to get her a drink of water with one of the sterilized cups he saw earlier.
Concerned, Areena asked "Are you well, Ambassador?"
"Here Uhura, drink this."
As Uhura drank the desperately needed water, Areena looked at McCoy appalled.
"You address your mistress by her given name?"
Spock immediately understood what was happening and approached Areena with his head bowed.
"Where we come from madam, it is our way."
Looking at Uhura she said, "You have strange ways, you Federationist. If you are well now, I will take my leave of you."
Recovering, Uhura said, "Yes, I'm fine. Thank you."
Uhura watched as the door closed, then sat heavily on the large comfortable bed.
"You're doing a good job, Uhura. You know, for a moment there I thought that woman was going to be a victim of that Tal’shaya move Spock taught you,” said Kirk grinning.
"Well, did you catch that smirk on her face? She doesn't know who she's dealing with." With a cunning smile, her dignity returned with a teasing twinkle in her eyes. "I'm a communications officer with four favorites, am I not?"
There were three red faces and one with green ear tips.
"Indeed."
**********
There was a knock at the door that startled everyone. Uhura rose to answer it when Spock stopped her.
"I believe that is my job Mistress."
"Yes, you're right. Sorry, Mr. Spock."
She looked at Kirk and said, "I don't believe this is going to be as easy as we thought."
He placed a supportive hand on her shoulder and gave it a squeeze.
Spock left the bedroom and walked across the Great Room, filled with the planet’s enriched designs, to answer the door. When Spock opened the door, there stood three tall men with pleasant faces waiting to address him. The taller of the three addressed Spock humbly.
"We are here to see the Ambassador."
“May I ask the nature of your visit?”
"You must be her favorite. I am Tor. This is Vener and Dran. We are here to escort your mistress’ slaves around the service areas to better serve her. Are they here?"
"Yes, follow me."
Spock led the men to a seating area, and proceeded to the bedroom. The three men stood confused as to why the Ambassador’s favorite would bring them to a room reserved for guest only.
"Surely he does not want us to sit."
"I heard these people’s customs were strange. Do not let her catch you sitting, Vener, just to be safe."
"Madam, three slaves are here to show your servants the serviceable area of the palace." Spock informed her.
Uhura peaked out of the room and smoothed the back of her hair. She straightened as she looked at Kirk and the others and said, “Show time gentlemen,” and they followed as Spock led her to the nervously awaiting men, who bowed as she entered the room. It was obvious they were taken aback by her beauty as well as her kind disposition when she addressed them.
"No harm is to come to my men. We are new here and our ways are different, so if they offend any of the women please inform them as much. I'll deal with them myself if I feel the situation warrants it."
"Yes, Ambassador. Someone else will come to escort your favorite soon. We will be back by then, so you will not be left alone to do your own bidding."
"Thank you. You may leave now."
They bowed their heads and left the room with the three new servants.
***********
"I'm sorry I put you in an awkward position Spock."
Spock looked at her with an unreadable expression with his hands clasped behind his back. He did not blink or move a muscle, just stared at her. Someone who didn't know Spock would have contributed his silence to irritation or displeasure, but she knew he wasn't angry; he was just working out some equation in his head that included her. Uhura sat waiting for him to speak.
"Why did you choose me?"
Uhura quickly lowered her eyes avoiding Spock’s searching ones as her mind raced along with her heart. After she had chosen Spock, she asked herself the same question. Why Spock? There was no time to analyze her motivation, having to continue the roll as a no-nonsense Ambassador.
Spock hesitantly reached out, then with confidence, took her chin in his hand. He looked into her warm brown eyes searching and noticed her temperature went up by a degree as her face darkened.
There was a knock at the door. Spock held her eyes for five seconds more, then exited the room to answer.
With the same build as the first three, two slaves of the Queen stood at the entrance when Spock called out, “Come”
"Are you Spock? I'm sorry, Mr. Spock?"
"Correct."
"My name is Tam and this is Kal. I am your guide to escort you around the palace to better serve your mistress. Kal will stay to take your place till we come back."
Spock looked at Kal, studying his face and did not like what he saw.
"I would rather wait until one of our own comes back. My mistress is... very particular of the men in her company."
Uhura stood as she tried dispelling Spock’s penetrating eyes a moment before. She felt as if he were looking straight through her soul, nothing hidden from view. // What just happened? // Shakily, she tried to pulled herself together and walked into the room to see whom Spock was speaking to. She noticed a minor change in his tone and pitch and wondered what caused it.
Kal watched Uhura's graceful moves as she filled the room with her presence and spoke to Spock as he watched her. He took in her beauty from her toes to finally rest on her beautiful brown eyes, alerting Spock to her presence in the room.
"I will treat her well Mr. Spock, one favorite to another."
The look did not escape Spock.
"You are a favorite? Of whom may I ask?"
"I live here in the palace as one of the many favorites of the Queen herself."
Spock looked at the tall muscular man with thick, dark wavy hair and golden eyes, then felt a twinge of…what?
//The thought of having him here alone with the lieutenant…//
"I will come, but you will not, touch the Ambassador in any-way Kel."
Kel looked at Spock and gave him an irritated but understanding nod.
Spock turned and walked toward Uhura, placing a hand on her back as he led her towards the bedroom. She noticed the light touch and it sent a delicious shiver up her spine, and it suddenly came to her attention that it was only she who touched him in the past. She began to wonder why he did it. // Was it for appearance sake or was it because he…//
"Lieutenant, Kel is one of many favorites of the Queen. If there are many, I am to assume he has not been intimate with her for quite some time. Watch yourself. Do you understand what I am saying, Lieutenant?"
"Yes, Mr. Spock."
He looked at her a moment more, nodded, then left her to join Tam.
*****************
Kel stood there in the Great Room hoping to get a glimpse of the beautiful young mistress as she remained in her room.
Uhura stood in her room wondering what to do next. Spock evidently didn't miss Kel's hungry look and neither did she.
As she walked into the Great Room, Kel joined her with a few quick strides.
"Is there something you require, my lady?"
He added in a deep whisper, "Anything?"
Uhura noticed how captivatingly handsome this man was and the growing hunger in his eyes.
// It would seem there are some pleasurable advantages living here as a woman. //
She then banished the thought. She didn't approve of slavery, // but handsome willing males... Stop it, Nyota Uhura! //
"No, I do not require anything, thank you. You don't have to stay here. Is there something else you'd rather be doing right now, Kel?" A light shone in his eyes as he moved closer to Uhura.
//Ooops, wrong choice of words. //
She noticed his breathing getting heavier as he approached her. "I can think of something, my lady," he said seductively, stopping only inches away filling her with his arousing, musky scent. She couldn’t move as he held her eyes and put his hand on her back, slowly moving it down to her buttocks, squeezing and pulling her forward against him. A moan escaped her lips as Kel kissed her neck and his skillful hands traveled across her hips, up her waist, leaving a burning trail that has been untouched for so long. As his hands continued their trek they moved to cup her...
// No, no // thought the dazed and heated Uhura.
Breathing heavily, Uhura pushed hard against Kel, making him stumble, then fall with the unexpected change of events. Trembling, she looked at the shocked, rejected man and opened her mouth to apologize, but before she could do that Spock walked into the room.
Assessing the situation, he picked up the enormous man with ease and escorted him, unceremoniously, to the door.
"Your services are not required here.” He tossed the man with more force than he intended to and Kel almost ran into the returning Enterprise crew with flailing arms.
The startled men entered the room looking from Uhura to Spock. She didn't make eye contact with them and quickly retreated to the bedroom.
"What was that all about, Spock?" asked McCoy.
Spock didn't answer as he stared at the bedroom door. His movements tense, he then followed Uhura. Shutting the door behind him, he left the three men standing in the Great Room, speechless.
"Well I'll be! What do you think that was all about, Jim?"
"Hmm. I've never seen Spock act that way. He just about threw that man out the door,” said Kirk.
Looking at his two companions, he came to a conclusion.
"Well, knowing our Mr. Spock, I guess the man was thrown out for… logical reasons."
************
Spock found Uhura standing near the big picture window as the evening sun bathed her body with illuminating rays. He came and stood before her with his hands behind his back, and clamped down on the control he lost when he came back into the suite.
Spock spoke authoritatively while trying to make eye contact with her.
"What happened, Lieutenant?"
Uhura wouldn't look at him. She was tempted, very tempted by Kel, only to fulfill her own selfish wants.
"Lieutenant, I asked you a question."
"Nothing, Mr. Spock. Nothing happened."
He stood there and noticed her uncomfortable stance.
"Lieutenant, did Kel... touch you... inappropriately?"
She swallowed hard.
He heard it.
She looked up at him.
He looked down at her.
She knew he was angry, but why?
He deduced he was angry, why?
// Why? //
"Mr. Spock, he tried, but nothing happened."
She could tell through many years of serving with him that Spock relaxed without moving a muscle or his expression.
"Mr. Spock, I won't lie to you I..."
Swallow.
// Why do I feel as if I'm being unfaithful to him? This is ridiculous. //
He moved a little closer.
His expression softened as she looked into his eyes, and surprising even himself, he lightly caressed the side of her face.
"You were tempted, Nyota. I know. He is a perfect specimen and you would not be human if you were not attracted."
As she listened, that same tingling feeling came back full force this time, just as it did when he touched her back. Becoming lost in the moment, they stood close enough to feel each other's breaths on their faces. She smelled the heat from his world; he smelled the sweet earth from hers.
Spock felt a lump in his throat and tried to speak around it, whispering.
"I would be most appreciative if you would not let it happen again."
Before either knew what was happening, Spock slowly lowered his head as she raised her chin. Their lips millimeters apart, both closed their eyes....
"Spock, what are you doing in there? What happened with that guy you threw out of here?"
McCoy was speaking through the closed and locked door, very annoyed at the mystery the encounter when they arrived.
Spock and Uhura both looked at the door simultaneously, then blushingly back at each other. Spock stood rigid controlling the reaction of what almost happened and crossed the room to open the door before McCoy's behavior became more erratic.
"Well it's about time. What happened? Uhura? Uhura are you all right? What did you do to her, Spock?"
McCoy noticed a shaken Uhura and started an examination with his hand held equipment.
"Hmm, her heart rate is racing and she's flushed."
Spock glanced at Uhura and said, "I did nothing, Doctor. The Queen gave the lieutenant a transient favorite to replace me while I inevitably learned all I could to alleviate any burdens or menial tasks from my mistress. When I walked in I found the man had recently come into contact with the floor forcibly. I assumed his behavior was merely intolerable by the lieutenant (which I was correct) and I threw him out."
"That Cossack!!" snarled Chekov.
Concerned, Kirk walked to Uhura, assuming her frazzled state was due to Kel’s advances.
"Are you alright, Lieutenant?"
"Yes, Captain, I'm fine. I just won't accept any more temporaries,” she said smiling.
Knowing that she doesn't like to complain, he gave her a skeptical look, wondering if she was being truthful.
Looking at Spock, Uhura said, "Honest Captain, he never touched me."
Kirk looked to his first officer for reassurance and Spock assured his friend he would not leave her alone again.
"Well, it's dinner time and we slaves get to eat with the rest of the slaves. You two however, get to enjoy your dinner in luxury, here. The servants will be up soon. Enjoy."
Kirk and Spock spoke volumes in one glance and Spock slightly bowed his head in acknowledgement.
The three men left the suite leaving Spock and Uhura alone once again.
***************
Leading Uhura to a chair he brushed the top of her hand with his fingers.
// What is he doing? This can't be happening. //
Taking a seat directly across from her, Spock bequeathed certain information he learned to his new Mistress.
"Uhura, I have learned all the duties of a favorite from Tam. I am to do just about everything for you except breathe. That may include getting into the tub and bathing you among other... things, while you hold your meetings. Uhura? Nyota!"
Uhura looked at Spock as if he had lost all sense of reasoning. Ostentatious, intimate behavior stayed behind closed doors in Uhura's book. The Tavian's life style was becoming more intolerable by the minute, particularly the tub meetings. She couldn't imagine having to bathe with Spock. (Well, she could, but wouldn't) //What if they decided they wanted to trade favorites? I'm sure everyone would want to go after mine. // Then her eyes flashed at Spock.
"Spock, surely Star Fleet does not expect us to prostitute ourselves, and don't give me that, ‘good for the many’ line either. I won’t do it. Everyone onboard the Enterprise will know. You know how gossip flies through the grape vine. The next thing you know, everyone will be congratulating me on the birth of your child that we have hidden somewhere on the ship."
Spock tilted his head trying to determine if she was angry with him. Her attitude was not amicable and he decided she was perturbed about the enlightening information. Let's not forget the inevitable, inaccurate account of what gossip would reveal.
"Agreed. Therefore, I have a solution to alleviate our situation."
Uhura's anger slowly dissipated, her breathing calmed and her body began to relax once more. Spock was the smartest person she knew and was confident he could find a logical approach to solving their dilemma.
He was pleased to see that her anger was gone. Although he was not the cause of, he did not wish to experience her wrath personally.
She looked at him, waiting patiently for his very properly ordered thoughts to form into words.
After he offered her the solution to their problem, her surroundings began to spin out of control. She sat there, trying to focus on one Spock out of the four she suddenly saw before her.
He reached out to steady her as she swayed a bit and she used his firm grip to balance her unsteady world. Concern was written all over his face as he contemplated summoning McCoy.
"Mr. Spock, could you repeat what you just said?"
Noticing her now stabled condition, Spock’s expression softened.
"Marry me. Bond with me."
"That's what I thought you said."
She looked into his captivating eyes and saw that he was serious.
"I’m sorry, I want to marry someday, Mr. Spock, but not in name only or for convenience. I want to marry for love. Do you understand?"
"May I touch your thoughts?"
Surprised, Uhura looked at him skeptically. After awhile she cleared her throat nervously at the abrupt request and she consented with a nod.
He brushed his fingers lightly against her face, stopping at her contact points. Slowly he entered her mind and found it odd that he was able to access it so easily. // We are very compatible. // He revealed certain thoughts to her, thoughts he could not say out loud as a Vulcan. Spock opened the doors of her mind and wanted to explore every corner of her rooms, but he was on a mission, so he pushed on. There was one door left. Regardless of the depth, he penetrated deeply to get to it. It was locked, forbidding entry and he felt her hesitation. // Trust me Nyota, trust me // She relaxed and slowly the door opened through his guidance. He found what he knew was there and revealed its contents to her.
He slowly withdrew from her mind to find her watching him. After a moment of silence she spoke.
"You love me!"
"I would not prefer to say those words."
"But you do, I, I saw it."
With a slightly lifted brow Spock said, "Indeed."
She blushed under Spock’s penetrating gaze, knowing he wanted her to say what he found hidden in her own mind.
"And... I love you too."
"Yes, I know. That is why you chose me as your favorite."
He inherited his father's teasing nature and decided to use it to his advantage.
"I wonder what the Enterprise grape vine would say if they knew I was a victim of your secret fantasy while on this female- dominated world."
Returning his teasing stare, Uhura said, “The females would cheer for me.”
The tips of Spock's ears turned a darker shade of green. Once more serious, Spock reached out to caress her face, his voice suddenly tender.
"These are the thoughts on which I base my proposal. Our visit to this planet has been to our advantage, Nyota by allowing us to be honest with each other. Please say yes."
"It's very sudden, Spock."
"It has been two years, eight months and three days. We have wasted enough time."
Spock stood, pulling Uhura to her feet and would not let go of her hand as he looked into her eyes.
//Are her lips as soft as they look? How would it feel to have them touching mine. //
//What a gorgeous, magnificent Vulcan. He could be mine, those lips could be mine.//
He whispered with a hint of pleading.
"Say yes."
"Spock!"
"Say yes."
"Spock I..!"
"Say it."
Nyota Uhura looked into eyes that held hers captive and uttered the words that put her on a different life course.
"Yes."
He wrapped his arms around her waist and drew her closer, as she met his dark seductive eyes. Slowly he lowered his head, meeting soft lips that were parted, waiting for him to claim. He gave her a deep passionate kiss that initiated their bonding.
Spock broke off the kiss reluctantly and placed his fingers at her contact points, slipping easily into her mind that was willing to accept him. Each said in unison, //Parted from me and never parted, never and always touching and touched.// The bonding was complete, they were one.
**********************
"Good-bye, Ambassador Uhura. You are a tough negotiator and I hope to meet you again in the future. Go in peace with our agreement and your men."
She eyed Spock as she said that last bit.
"Thank you, your Majesty. I am sure the Federation will be well satisfied with our agreement. Again, I am sorry I injured you in the arena."
"No apologies Uhura." said the Queen through swollen lips and eyes.
"You saw a threat to losing your man and accepted my challenge. Anyone as small as you that could beat me at my own game, deserves the mineral rights and the man."
Uhura bowed her head and accepted a firm handshake from the Queen who tried to steal her husband. She had to use her left hand because Uhura had broken her right one.
The Queen and her entourage left the Enterprise crew at their beam- down point and headed for home.
"I believe the Federation will find this form of Ambassadorship arbitrarily unconventional, my wife," said Spock as he held out two fingers, continuing the conversation through their bond.
Kirk looked at the two and smiled as McCoy whispered,
Everyone on the Enterprise will be satisfied and relieved that these two finally found each other. Everyone saw the match except them… and Christine.
